U3A Carol Service
Thursday 8th December 2 pm
We are holding a carol service this year at St. Thomas' Church High Lane at 2pm on Thursday 8th December 2016 followed by light refreshments of tea/coffee plus cake or warm mince pies.

Art event at the Lowry
Thursday 17th Nov 2016   L S Lowry - The Art and The Artist
U3A National Office has organised a workshop and talk on L S Lowry to take place at The Lowry, Salford Quays, on Thursday 17th November from 10.30 am to 1.15pm. The cost is £25 including refreshments and light lunch. Capacity is limited to 20 places. You can download a flyer here

Xmas party tickets
There are still some tickets available for the Xmas party and we will be selling them again at the November meeting. Tickets cost £5 each and are for Members only. 
11 August
Wine tasting evening tickets
The Wine tasting evening is 30 September. For just £6 there will be six wines for you to taste accompanied by cheese and biscuits. If you missed getting your ticket at the meeting today, we will be selling them again at the September meeting or you can contact any Committee member to reserve a ticket. 

1 June

Jess Quayle, a journalist with the BBC, is putting together a radio feature on people who learn musical instruments in older age and why they do so. She is seeking statistics on the extent to which this happens through the U3A and names of individuals who are willing to be interviewed or even perform for the programme. Some of you may have heard her work on You & Yours or if you listen to Farming Today. Please email the webmaster without delay if you are interested in this as the timeframe is short. 
11 May
The Singing group performed a programme of music at the May general meeting. Songs ranged from Vivaldi to Abba with something for all tastes. Click here for photos of the event.
12 March
The Annual Lunch was a great success attended by over 80 members. This is our 15th year. We were joined in our celebrations by Pam Jones, Chair of the Third Age Trust who presented us with a card from National Office. As well as the delicious meal we enjoyed a celebration cake.  Click here for photos of the lunch.

At the AGM Group Leaders presented their reports for the year. You can read these in the Documents area.
16 February
Tony Edens runs a Lip Reading group for Woking U3A. His book “Lip Reading – a self-help textbook” is now available on Amazon. This is available for free download on the 1st March, 1st April and 1st May. It is a Kindle book and can be read on most computers, tablets and smartphones. The Kindle reading app is also available as a free download from the Amazon website. More information here

12 February
The minutes of the AGM are now available on the Documents page. The Officers and Committee for 2016 are available here and the 2016 Group programme has been updated. This will go out by email shortly and a printed version will be available at the March monthly meeting.
28 January - Quiz group
The new Quiz group had its first meeting today. The group will be meeting at 10am on the fourth Thursday of the month. Please contact Diane Saxon if you are interested in this group.
26 January - Edinburgh in June
Come and join our holiday to Edinburgh from 12-17 June.
Accommodation at Best Western Kings Manor Hotel.
Highlights include visits to Holyrood, Scottish Parliament, Rosslyn Chapel, Edinburgh Castle etc.

Cost is £540 sharing. Single Supplement £125. Deposit £50 to be paid at the February meeting. To reserve your place please contact Sue Harlin.

Membership - you need to renew your membership in February. You will be pleased to hear that we are able to maintain our very low membership cost of £5 for this year.
You can also subscribe to the U3A Magazine Third Age Matters for an additional £2.50 which brings you five editions of the magazine delivered to your door.

Annual Lunch tickets
The Annual Lunch this year is our 15th anniversary lunch and we have Pam Jones, U3A National Chair, coming to talk to us. If you missed getting your ticket at the meeting today, we will be selling them again at the February meeting or you can contact me by email to reserve a place and request your menu choices. Victorian Society Exhibition
Victorian Society’s photographic exhibition Saving a Century, curated by noted architectural historian Gavin Stamp, will be on show free of charge at The John Rylands Library, 150 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 3EH from 8 January – 24 March, daily during Library hours.
Using archive photographs and material from over fifty years of the Victorian Society’s fight to save historic buildings, the exhibition charts the successes and defeats of the organisation that has done so much to change public attitudes towards the nineteenth century’s best architecture. After more than 60 venues around Britain this is the final showing of the exhibition, which includes local images from Manchester, Oldham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Middleton, Preston and Nelson. - Several Committee members are retiring this year so we need new Committee members for 2016. These will be elected at the AGM in February. If you would like to join the Committee please print off the nomination form from the last page of the November newsletter, ask fellow members to nominate and second you, and give the completed form to Margaret McDermott or Sue Harlin before the AGM.
